Choose the right pump for the well, not just the horsepower.
The depth to water, required flow, pressure, piping losses and well recovery rate all matter. A larger motor is not automatically a better match.
Start with your system type
Deep-well pumps
Installed in the well below water level. Selection depends on total dynamic head, required gallons per minute and the well’s sustainable yield.
Shallow-well pumps
Mounted above ground and limited by practical suction lift. The depth to water, suction piping and loss of prime matter.
Constant-pressure systems
Variable-speed controls can maintain steadier pressure under changing demand, but require compatible components and service planning.
Buyer checklist
Five details to collect before comparing pumps.
Use the manufacturer’s performance curve, not a single horsepower number, to assess fit.
- Static and pumping water levels (feet).
- Target flow for expected simultaneous fixtures (GPM).
- Pressure requirement at the tank and fixtures (PSI).
- Pipe diameter, length and friction loss.
- Well yield and local installation requirements.
Important: Pump sizing and electrical work are best confirmed by a qualified local professional. See symptom-based troubleshooting and pressure tank basics.
